Cycling Network upgrade program

In 2016, Council is working on a number of major cycling projects that will help to make cycling a safe, enjoyable and convenient ‘everyday’ transport option for the residents, workers and visitors to North Sydney.

These projects focus on the installation of fully separated cycleways to ensure safe and direct cycling routes that can be used by people of all ages and cycling abilities.

The guiding document for these projects is the North Sydney Integrated Cycling Strategy:

In 2016, we are working with the NSW State Government to deliver a new cycleway connection through the North Sydney Centre that will complete the missing link between existing cycleways over the Sydney Harbour Bridge and at Naremburn. The proposed alignment follows the Pacific Highway and West Street. When complete, this link will provide a safe, continuous and convenient north south cycling connection through North Sydney that will cater for a range of trips from short rides to local shops and cafes, through to regional cycle commuting.

In July 2015, Council resolved to construct the prosed Route 2 Cycleway and Streetscape Upgrade Plan.

This plan proposes significant improvements to streetscape quality, landscaping and the walking and cycling network in parts of North Sydney, Neutral Bay and Cremorne, including sections of fully separated cycleway. We are currently in the detailed planning stage for this project, with construction of works scheduled to begin in mid-2016. Implementation will be staged over a number of years with priority given to the most significant gaps in the existing network. As the route forms part of the regional connection to the north east, the route has received significant funding support from the NSW State Government.

Concept plans of the route and related documents can be viewed here.

Council is also developing concept plans for approximately 6km of cycling network between the suburbs of Cremorne, Neutral Bay and North Sydney to the south of Neutral Bay. These concepts will likely include sections of fully separated cycleway through busier areas and will connect residential areas with local villages and the regional cycling network.

The provision of fully separated cycleways along key routes will be supported by updated on-road cycling facilities on local roads.

The following Cycling Strategy actions were commenced or completed in 2015/2016:

  • 60 new bike parking ‘O-rings’ or U-rails installed in village centres over 2014/2016.
  • Concept design has commenced for new routes through St Leonards, Crows Nest, Cammeray, Neutral Bay and Cremorne. Construction of these routes is expected to commence in mid 2016.
  • Upgraded on road bike lanes installed in parts of Crows Nest and Cremorne.
  • Council ran its annual Ride to Work Day in October 2015.
  • Council has commenced a study to identify way to help school students in North Sydney walk and ride  to school.
