Preschools offer an opportunity for children to play and learn with children their own age before they start school. Centres provide an educational program designed to develop each child's individual abilities. Care is generally available for children aged 3 - 5 years, during school hours and in school terms. There are usually fixed attendance times. Children generally take their own lunch and snacks.

Preschools are licensed by the NSW Department of Community Services.
