> Bradfield Park Plan of Management
The Bradfield Park and Kirribilli Foreshore area, with its harbourside location and proximity to key Sydney landmarks is one of the most important public spaces in Sydney. In order to provide an overall landscape design for both the Park and Foreshore areas Council commissioned the Masterplan project in 1997.
The Masterplan is based on an analysis of site conditions, the site's harbour and urban context and Council's strategic direction and the results of a lengthy process of community consultation including workshops, information stalls and on site interviews with park users.
Areas of particular interest and concern to residents and other stakeholders included:
- cultural and natural heritage
- recreation, leisure and special events
- circulation and access
- land use planning and management
- image and character
The draft Masterplan was placed on public exhibition in late 1997 to invite feedback from all stakeholders. The final Masterplan which incorporated amendments proposed during the public exhibition period was adopted in 1998.
The principal features of the Masterplan include:
- the creation of a series of large grassy terraces to define areas for different recreation activities as well as control soil erosion
- construction of amphitheatre style seating near the North Pylon and Broughton Street Lookout to cater for large scale special events
- improvement of pedestrian connections along the foreshore
- restoration of natural character along the Kirribilli Foreshore including replanting of native vegetation
- sensitive treatment of heritage and archaeological features
- redesigning Bradfield Park North to make it more accommodating for events such as the monthly market
- upgrading of the area adjacent to Jeffrey Street Wharf including the construction of tiered seating and a pedestrian promenade near the steps down to the waters edge
- the creation of a shared pedestrian and vehicle esplanade on Olympic Drive
The masterplan is currently being implemented in stages, with construction commencing as funding permits. Detailed designs are being prepared for each stage, providing further opportunity for community input.
