Playground Design

North Sydney Council boasts a wide range of innovative play equipment that now compliments some of the more traditional swing sets and climbing equipment. Bradfield Park, located beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge boasts a modern, custom designed cable play structure befitting this spectacular location and other foreshore parks such as Berry Island Reserve, Milson Park and Waverton Park have custom designed playgrounds that reflect the individual character of the parks and offer visitors unique and varied play experiences. St Thomas Rest Park incorporates rocketship rockers and a space capsule structure, while Brennan Park has a lush, shady, 'Children's Garden' theme with mosaic hopscotch and daisy motif spring rockers.

Playground Upgrading

Since 1996, North Sydney Council has been progressively upgrading all playgrounds. We have received awards for our playground upgrading program from the Keep Australia Beautiful Council and from Kidsafe NSW. Over the past 12 years, North Sydney Council has moved away from using 'off-the-shelf' equipment: instead creating custom-designed playgrounds that respond to their location and provide unique opportunities and challenges for children of all levels of physical ability.

In recognition of the importance of playgrounds Council developed a Playgrounds Plan of Management in 1995, with a comprehensive review conducted in 2002. The first Plan led to the development of a Playgrounds Methodology Document, which prioritised all playgrounds in the North Sydney area according to their need for upgrading.

Berry Island playgroundThe result of the Playgrounds Methodology Document has been an ongoing Capital Works Program to strategically replace and upgrade Council's playground assets. To date 28 of Council's 30 Playgrounds have been upgraded and Council has achieved its goal of ensuring no resident has to walk more than 500m to access a quality playground.
