And the winner is... BP Parkland

Sydney landscape architects McGregor and Partners have won North Sydney's inaugural award of design excellence for their creation of BP Parkland on Waverton Peninsula.

The awards, presented by North Sydney Mayor Genia McCaffery at the North Sydney Oval last night, were judged by architect and lecturer Catherine Lassen, landscape architect and horticulturist Sue Barnsley,  and UNSW associate professor of multi disciplinary design Davina Jackson.

The judges commented that the park 'evokes its industrial past offering new ways of seeing the site and recalling memories of Sydney's working harbour.  It is a seminal work of landscape architecture which has been formed with clarity and restraint."

Cr McCaffery said she had received many compliments about the park.  "I know it works because people tell me all the time how much they love it."

Last night's award added to a string of architectural awards the park has won since it was completed last year.

"While we cannot expect everyone to like the same things, I believe the community as a whole does recognise good design."

Commendations were given to the HPA Architects for the new Cavill Apartments on Cliff Street, Milsons Point.  Judges commented that the integration of  'multilevel residential apartments and carparking on a difficult cliff site is a positive addition to the western edge of Milsons Point.'

Architect Elizabeth Peet was commended for alterations she designed for a home at 200 West Street, Cammeray.  'By cutting and reforming the rear elevation, light and an intimate connection with the garden have transformed the expanded living spaces of this dwelling.'

And Nettleton Tribe was commended for its design of the Abode complex, at 599 Pacific Highway, St Leonards.  Judges commented that the Abode design 'offers a new type of residential mixed use community. It has been strategic in rationalising its corner position on the Pacific Highway.'

Cr McCaffery said she believed the North Sydney design excellence awards would grow from here. "It is my hope that they become an A-list event for Sydney's design community.

"I also hope that by recognising excellence in design, we can encourage better quality design in all developments in North Sydney."
