Keeping kindy kids safe

Parents and carers of kindergarten children will have one less thing to worry about, thanks to an information kit explaining how to keep children safe on or near roads around schools.

North Sydney Mayor Genia McCaffery said streets around schools were chaotic at the beginning and end of the school day.

"Children, particularly those of kindergarten age, are extremely vulnerable road users because of their size and inability to judge speed and distance.

"We need special rules in school zones and by following them we can work together to ensure children's safety."

Examples of such rules were 40kph speed restrictions, school bus zones and parking restrictions around schools.

Mosman Mayor Denise Wilton said information in the pack would explain the rules and give general advice on how to keep children safe on or near the road.

"Many parents and caregivers who are new to school environments, would not be used to driving in areas so heavily frequented by children and it can be quite daunting. This information kit spells out how they can take special care to ensure the safety of not only their child but all children in the area."

The pack gives information about parking signs, driveway safety, stopping distances and general road safety for children.

The packs will be distributed to schools over the next few weeks.
