Live Life! Seniors Week 3-7 April
Luncheons, a documentary launch, a free movie, a floral art exhibition, storytime sessions for grandparents and grandchildren, and a range of hobby classes are all on offer during of North Sydney Seniors Week, April 3-9.
North Sydney Mayor Genia McCaffery said seniors were a vital part of the North Sydney community. "The vast majority of our senior residents have given much of their time and energy over the years, through a range of service, leisure and community groups, to build our community spirit and enrich other people's lives. This week of festivities and activities is a great opportunity for us to honour their wonderful contribution to, and the important role they play in, our community - and to remind them they're forever young!"
Organised around the theme "Live Life!", the action-packed week will kick off with an open day at Neutral Bay Community Centre on Monday 3 April, showcasing activities such as computer classes, Scrabble, quilting, yoga, Bridge and Solo. Greeting card classes will also be held for those who are computer literate. Bookings are essential, ph 9953 6447.
Also on Monday, at 2.30pm, the Cremorne Orpheum Picture Palace will host a free screening of the movie, The World's Fastest Indian, starring Anthony Hopkins. Hopkins plays Kiwi motorcycle legend Burt Munro the New Zealand motorcycle legend who, in 1967, set a world speed record - that remains unbroken - on his classic Indian bike. Tickets for the film are limited and are available in advance from Council's Customer Service Centre.
On Tuesday April 4, North Sydney Council will launch a documentary, directed by Chris Parker and Helen McGrath, featuring local residents and octogenarians Ruby and Lex Graham who created and cultivated the spectacular community bush garden on Cremorne Point. The launch will be in the Hutley Hall from 12pm to 2pm and will be accompanied by a floral art exhibition by local seniors.
Stanton Library will hold 'how to' classes throughout Seniors Week including 'Internet for Seniors' and 'Intro to Computers', 'Family History in North Sydney' and 'Storytime for Grandparents and Grandchildren'.
