HMAS PlatypusHMAS Platypus

Handed over to the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust in June 2005, HMAS Platypus is nestled below the suburb of Neutral Bay on a quiet harbour inlet.

Formerly the site of a gasworks, a workshop for servicing torpedoes, and a base for Australia's submarines, the site that has been left is an industrial setting that is excavated out of the sandstone and spread over several levels.

The site became the eighth on Sydney Harbour to come under the management of the Trust in 2005.

HMAS Platypus is currently closed to public access while the Harbour Trust develops a management plan for the site and conducts assessments of the ground contamination and buildings on the site.

What's happening at HMAS Platypus?

The Harbour Trust has conducted various HMAS Platypus site investigations and planning studies as part of the preparation of the Comprehensive Plan for the site. Part of this work will involve drilling and environmental sampling to develop a new remediation strategy and action plan.
