Ride to Work

Each year more people are cycling and reaping the benefits of a fitter, healthier, wealthier and happier lifestyle. Yet many find it hard to change lifelong habits of driving or catching public transport.

1. Time
Bicycle Victoria research shows that for trips under 5km it is usually quicker to cycle than drive. By riding a bike to work the time 'lost' travelling can be used for exercise.

2. No sweat
Many employers are making it easier for employees to ride to work by offering shower and bike storage facilities. Employers can also benefit from the reduced demand for parking space and other car-related expenses.

3. Dressed for success
Keep a spare change of clothes with you at work, or bring in a fresh load on the days you don't ride.

4. It's too far
Build up to total amount of km by driving the first half and then cycling the remainder. Alternatively, ride to a railway station and then catch a train.

5. Bikeless
Borrow a friends bike, or buy a second hand one. The money you save on petrol or public transport will soon pay for your new bike.

6. Money
You can save thousand of dollars a year by riding to work. It's one of the simplest get-rich schemes around. The money you save can be put into superannuation - you'll need it as you'll live longer!

7. Danger
If you are worried about safety talk to colleagues who already ride, visit the RTA website for reading material or contact your local council's Road Safety Officer.

8. Health
Cycling is an enjoyable, easy-on-the-body activity ideal for people re-discovering the exercise habit. Try some short trips initially and build up gradually.

9. Employer Benefits
Staff who arrived by bike will be fresh and invigorated and won't arrived stressed after being stuck in traffic. A healthier person means less likelihood of sick days!

10. Age
You're never too old! Exercise will keep you muscles conditioned and strengthen your bones. There are many 'older' people who cycle, the key is not to over do it.
