Next Building Bridges to Boorowa will be September, 2010Celebrating Biodiversity Month!
Why do we go each year? The experience is an eye-opener to the country lifestyle and the issues farmers face in the Lachlan Valley, especially salinity or rising groundwater tables, a result of the past practise of overclearing the woodland. North Sydney Council's Bushcare program has been taking volunteers to the Boorowa area since 2000 and planted thousands of trees, shrubs and grasses each year. The result is a mosaic of corridors of thousands of flourishing trees, which are now helping to drop the water table, increase habitat for the threatened Superb Parrot and many other species of wildlife, provide shelter for the ewes during lambing, act as windbreaks and erosion control and help suck up our excessive amounts of carbon dioxide. This annual tree planting trip is always an adventure for us city-folk. We enjoy the country hospitality, the beautiful fresh air, sometimes a Superb Parrot or two, and always extremes in the weather! This weekend is for the volunteer who is up for a challenge, with lots of tree planting - rain, hail or shine.
Please note:
2010 will be North Sydney Bushcare's 10th visit to Boorowa and we look forward to consolidating our efforts with more planting, with you!
