Overview of the North Sydney Council area
This overview of the North Sydney Council area looking from Cammeray south to the Harbour and Sydney City illustrates the developed nature of the area. Regionally significant St Leonards Park, part of the central open space corridor, is in the foreground, and the North Sydney CBD is in the middle ground. The photo clearly shows how the Warringah expressway divides the area, and is a major barrier to pedestrian movement.

Berry Island and Surrounds
This photograph shows the urban bushland areas of Gore Cove Reserve (front left) and the adjacent Berry Island Reserve (centre), Wollstonecraft, with the Sydney CBD in the background. Much of North Sydney's open space is located on the harbour foreshores, and the Strategy proposes pursuing opportunities to link existing open spaces to create regionally significant walking trails, and to work towards continuous public foreshore access.

Graythwaite Estate
Just five minute's walk from the North Sydney CBD, the Graythwaite Estate consists of a Victorian mansion set in six acres of landscaped gardens. North Sydney Council has been fighting to ensure that at least a portion of the Estate, which is owned by NSW Health, is preserved as public open space. The Strategy validates Council's support for this position; confirming a community need for additional open space in this location.

The National Award winners will be announced at the upcoming Parks and Leisure Australia conference to be held in Darwin in September 2009.
