Save our Village Centres - don't let the State Government turn Military Road into another Parramatta Road

The RTA has announced its intention to install a tidal flow scheme and remove 30 parking spaces on Military Road at Cremorne.

North Sydney Council and the businesses of Neutral Bay and Cremorne believe reducing parking will destroy our village shopping centres.

The proposed changes will save just two minutes for bus commuters but will threaten the livelihood of hundreds of businesses.

Parked cars create a buffer between traffic and pedestrians. Removing parking will speed up traffic, creating a freeway effect and making the footpath unpleasant for pedestrians.

In other areas where parking has been sacrificed for traffic, such as Parramatta Road, the strip shopping centres have become unviable. As the number of vacant shops increases, so does graffiti and vandalism.

When parking is removed from Military Road, cars will be pushed back into residential streets, creating parking problems for residents and their visitors.

Adjusting Military Road is a bandaid solution that will not solve the transport problem to the northern beaches peninsula. Any gain will be temporary and quickly lost with vehicles attracted from parallel road corridors and the next population growth on the peninsula.

Don't let the State Government sacrifice our village centres for a transport solution that won't work. Say no - write to the Roads Minister Michael Daley today.

"Our village centres add life and character to the lower north shore. Don't let the State Government's failure to plan public transport turn Military Road into another Parramatta Road. Write to the Roads Minister today."
Genia McCaffery, Mayor, North Sydney

"Heavier traffic flow and the loss of already limited car parking will have an adverse effect on the businesses in Cremorne and threaten the viability of our village centre."
Ulrik Funch, Cremorne Chamber of Commerce

"The Neutral Bay community has spent more than $1million beautifying the area and creating a village feel. Progressive changes to Military Road puts all the good work that Neutral Bay Mainstreet has achieved at risk."
Rick Doran, Neutral Bay Chamber of Commerce
