North Sydney LGA Wide Flood Study

North Sydney Local Government Area (LGA) Wide Flood Study

North Sydney Council and the NSW Government, as part of the Floodplain Management grant,  has completed the North Sydney LGA Wide Flood Study 2016 to begin the process of identifying flood prone land in accordance with the NSW State Government's Floodplain Development Manual.

Council undertook this study to identify and investigate how to effectively manage risks from flooding and to increase flood awareness in the community. The results of the study will help people better understand and plan for the possible flood risks they may face.

The Flood Study also looks at the effects of the overland flow of stormwater traveling downhill towards the harbour as well as areas normally associated with flooding where the water level in a creek, river or harbour rises. This overland flow may come from the roadway or from nearby higher properties.

This Flood Study is the second step in the floodplain management process.

The next step in this process is to undertake a Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan to determine the floodplain management measures necessary to mitigate the flood risk to property owners and occupiers.

If a property is identified as being located within the Flood Planning Levels, this means that flood-related development controls may apply for future development applications. Please note that individual properties have not yet been tagged in the Section 149(2) Planning Certificate. This next step will be undertaken as part of the upcoming Floodplain Risk Management Study and Plan. Individual property owners will be consulted prior to this change occurring.
