Licence Plate Recognition
Council now uses Licence Plate Recognition (LPR) technology to monitor parking in restricted areas without meters. The technology is also used to conduct surveys of North Sydney streets so that the Council can track parking patterns and vacancy rates across the area.
LPR surveys are faster, cheaper and more accurate than manual surveys. A parking survey done manually costs $1.65 per vehicle, compared to just 8 cents per vehicle for a survey conducted using LPR. The survey data is real-time, which means Council can build up a picture of vacancy rates over time and not just work from a snapshot taken on one day of the year.
LPR also has significant Work Health and Safety benefits. The technology reduces the time parking officers have to spend in isolated residential areas as well as the amount of bending and chalking that they do, which is expected to reduce the risk of injury to staff.
