Burton Street between Broughton Street and Humphrey Place is closed to traffic.

Traffic Flow

Part of Burton St is closed to traffic from October 2021.

Vehicular traffic in Burton St is closed between Broughton St and Humphrey Pl (see Legend below).

Purpose of the Plaza

North Sydney Council has received funding from the NSW Department of Planning, Industry Environment (DPE) "Streets as Shared Spaces Program" to create a trial plaza in Burton St, Kirribilli.

The trial plaza will be a central hub within the Kirribilli village, providing a place where people can meet friends or sit for a quiet moment in the sun. The space will be a contemporary and creative area, that can be used during the day and in the evening and is suitable for residents and visitors of all ages. The additional open space is expected to attract both residents and visitors to the Kirribilli village.

Council will assess the use of the plaza and the impact on traffic in determining whether the road should be closed permanently. The creation of a permanent plaza in Burton St is a major initiative in the Kirribilli Village Centre Masterplan

The trial plaza employs sustainable design principles with temporary elements that can be removed and re-used if Council decides not to proceed with a permanent closure at the end of the trial period.

For further information contact Robert Esdaile, Council's Project Manager, Engineering and Property Services Division on 9936 8100.

Council sought feedback about what the community liked about the plaza, what could be improved, and what might work well as part of a permanent plaza. Feedback closed on 31 March 2022. Council will assess community feedback, use of the temporary plaza (with a visitation study) and the impact on traffic (through a traffic study) to determine whether the road should be closed permanently following the conclusion of the temporary period.

At its meeting of February 2021, Council resolved to:

  • Council adopt a new Public Domain Masterplan for Kirribilli village centre.

  • Council proceeds with detailed design and construction of the temporary street closure of Burton St - green heart project (plaza between Burton St & Crescent Lane, to be in place for a period of 6 months which is funded through the NSW DPE "Streets as Shared Spaces Program".

  • Council proceeds with detailed design and construction of Bligh St - Pilot Shared Zone, to be in place for a period of 6 months, which is funded through the NSW DPE "Streets as Shared Spaces Program".

  • A traffic report was undertaken that recommended that Burton Street be closed to vehicular traffic. A number of actions to minimise impact were recommended and will be undertaken as part of the works.
