Australia Day Community Awards 2018

We're celebrating our unsung heroes on Australia Day!

Each year, North Sydney Council asks you to nominate people who make a difference in our community. They could be sports coaches, charity volunteers or someone who everyone in the neighbourhood turns to when they need a helping hand.  Nominations for the 2019 Australia Day Community Awards will open in July 2018.

The winners of the 2018 awards were announced on Australia Day, 26 January 2018.

Australia Day Community Awards 2018

In 2018 we congratulated these Community Award Winners…

Citizen of the Year:

The North Sydney Citizen of the Year Award was given to Sister Carmel McDonough RSM for her role as mission educator at Monte Sant’ Angelo Mercy College. Sr Carmel drives the Mercy Action Group (MAG) – a student-based initiative that advocates for critical social justice issues surrounding the environment, refugees, homelessness and indigenous people. She provides students with the knowledge and skills to act as responsible citizens within their local community and abroad.

This year there were two winners of the Community Group/Event of the Year.

Joint Community Groups of the Year:

Helen and Kostas Mallikopoulos were recognized with the award for their outstanding Christmas light display which draws large crowds and has raised contributed money for various charities over the past two decades.

The Uniting North Sydney Local Area Coordination Team were also donned with the honour for helping those in the local area with a disability better engage with their community, and live a quality life. The group has initiated a sweep of projects including community drop-in consultations, regular library hot desks, workshops and expos.
