North Sydney Art Prize 2013

In 2013, the North Sydney Art Prize entered an exciting phase with a revitalised format and new curatorial theme. For the first time the exhibition was held across two venues exhibiting 130 indoor and outdoor sculptures, video, installation and site-specific works, painting, drawing, printmaking and photography.

Exhibiting Artists

A total of 130 artists were selected from 447 entries by the distinguished Selection Panel. The artists ranged from locals to regional and national artists. Many of them have an impressive exhibition history and have been finalists in major national and international events.

There were 71 paintings, sculptures, video, installation and site-specific works exhibited at the Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability both inside the Caretakers Cottage, Mess Hall, Workshops, Artist Studio, Café and Coal Loader tunnel, as well as small to large scale sculptural works sited throughout the surrounding parklands. Works ranged in scale and materials and challenged our perceptions of both space and place.

There were 59 paintings, drawings, prints, photographs and sculptures exhibited in Hutley Hall in response to this year’s curatorial theme.

Curatorial Theme

The curatorial theme Toward 2020 embraces innovation and diversity in contemporary art inviting artists to consider the overarching principles of the new exhibition site at the Coal Loader Centre for Sustainability and North Sydney Council's 2020 Vision Living: Sustainably.

At the same time the new theme presents multiple possibilities for artists while providing an entry point into the many conversations about our complex relationship to the world around us and our individual and collective responsibilities in an ever changing local and global environment.

Artists were invited to respond to one of the following:

  1. Address a local or global issue broadly related to the curatorial theme (such as mass production, consumer culture, climate change, environmental, social and/or economic sustainability for example).  The theme could be addressed through a conceptual OR material approach to the artist's practice;
  2. respond to a cultural, historical or metaphorical aspect of the Coal Loader site;
  3. respond to a particular physical feature of the Coal Loader such as the harbour foreshore, parklands, readapted dwellings or disused tunnels.
