The number of young families choosing to reside in North Sydney is increasing. Analysis from the 2011 Census revealed that the number of children aged 0-12 increased 27% between 2006-2011. This is placing significant pressure on the local Childcare sector. To better understand this impact, North Sydney Council undertook a Review of Childcare Services in 2014 which is available below in related documents.
Playgroups offer an opportunity for children aged 0-5 years to meet, play and learn with other children and a chance for parents and carers to mix with others. The parent or carer must accompany children for the entire time.
Playgroups may be held in halls, church grounds or community centres. A small fee to cover costs is usually charged. For a list of playgroups in the North Sydney area, you can download the Children's Services Guide or search the Community Directory.
The Playgroup Association of NSW provides support to playgroups in NSW through playgroup starter kits, information and advice, field staff (including a special needs officer and an ethnic liaison officer), referral service, support network and discounted purchase on Playgroup Shop items.
