Between 2011 and 2016, the ABS Census revealed that the number of families with young children in North Sydney increased by 1004. The number of both single parent families and couples with young children continued to grow, with an additional 1387 children aged 0-11 years counted. Council is aware that such numbers are placing significant pressure on the need for additional preschool child care places, before and after school care places and primary school classes. Accordingly, Council continues to negotiate with both the Department of Education and child care providers to fill the gaps created by such significant increases.
Playgroups offer an opportunity for children aged 0-5 years to meet, play and learn with other children and a chance for parents and carers to mix with others. The parent or carer must accompany children for the entire time.
Playgroups may be held in halls, church grounds or community centres. A small fee to cover costs is usually charged. For a list of playgroups in the North Sydney area, you can download the Children's Services Guide or search the Community Directory.
The Playgroup Association of NSW provides industry support to playgroups in NSW, telephone (02) 9632 8577 or visit their website.
