Safe Places Program
In 1991, the AIDS Council of NSW (ACON) launched the Safe Place Program to provide a network of local organisations providing immediate refuge for LGBTI people fearful of street-based homophobic violence. North Sydney Council joined the program in 2005 and promoted it to organisations in the local government area.
In recent years, the reduction in street-based homophobic violence has resulted in the original goal of the program becoming obsolete. Consequently, in May 2013, ACON relaunched the program to accredit and publicly acknowledge organisations which: welcome sexuality, gender diverse, and intersex people; publically demonstrate support for LGBTI communities; and actively promote a prejudice and discrimination free space. In recognition of the contribution the relaunched Safe Place Program makes to Council’s goals for a safer and more inclusive and accepting community, Council encourages local organisations to join the Safe Place Program.
