Proposed changes to car parking spaces for new high-density development

You may have seen our consultation about a proposal to reduce the amount of car parking spaces in new high-density developments that are built near major transport hubs at North Sydney, Crows Nest, St Leonards and Milsons Point.

We’ve been seeking feedback from the community since 13 September on what they think about this proposed change (feedback closes 13 December). During this time, we have actively encouraged people to tell us what they think about the idea, including an article in our community newsletter, North Sydney News, which is delivered to all residents and businesses in the Council area.

Our aim is to get as much feedback as possible from the community so that Council can understand the full range of issues and opinions before a decision is made. The proposal as it stands right now, is a call for feedback.

Council is aware of a flyer being sent to local residents with some misinformation about this process including:

  • It claims the proposal is a Council decision. This is not true, Council has not made a decision.

  • It claims Council is proposing to severely reduce the amount of car parking available to residents in new developments. This is not true, this proposal applies only to developments built near major transport hubs where 28 per cent of resident do not own a car (according to the 2021 census).

The consultation closes 13 December and feedback will be reported to Council early next year for a decision.
