'A sober, industrious law-abiding people’: preliminary findings on the history of Chinese market gardeners and storekeepers in North Sydney, 1870-1932
The Chinese have been barely visible in the historical record of North Sydney. The ‘opposite shore’ of the late 1800s and early 1900s is usually characterised as a place of boat builders, ferry wharves, grand homes, spired churches and exclusive schools - the characters themselves being of British stock. This research project goes some way to writing the Chinese back into North Sydney’s history by finding out who these people were and where they lived and worked.
