If the halls and stages of the Orpheum Theatre could talk... what tales they would tell!
The Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace in Cremorne, affectionately known simply as ‘The Orpheum’, is one of the prized jewels in Sydney’s crown.
For almost a century, this beautiful Art Deco theatre has opened its doors to theatre lovers. Now for one night only, the Orpheum footlights will be shining directly on itself.
Dr Ian Hoskins, North Sydney Council’s Historian, and Dr Peter Sheridan AM, an expert on Art Deco buildings, will take centre stage to showcase the theatre’s history and architecture, as well as share snippets about some of its famous stars.
You’ll learn about the renowned architect who designed The Orpheum; hear how developers turned it into a shopping arcade in the 1980’s; marvel at the lengths Mike Walsh AM, OBE went to in order to bring it back to its former glory, and discover the action currently underway to have the Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace listed on the State Heritage Register to help ensure this iconic theatre is preserved for future generations.
This event is held as part of the National Trust Australian Heritage Festival 2022, the theme of which is ‘Curiosity’
