Some fast food facts...

  • The average distance food is transported is 2,300km! Food grown locally produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and may be fresher and better for you.
  • Food contributes 28% of our carbon footprint; 46% of our water use; and 49% of our total ecological footprint.
  • It takes 200 litres of water to produce a single 150g serve of meat. More water goes into producing a single steak than a person uses in a week of showers. A cow also produces 100kg of methane every year.
  • Annually Australian's throw out $2.4 billion dollars worth of food.


What can we Do?

Buy locally grown and produced food.

Choose organic.

  • These days there are a growing number of farmers producing organic meat and dairy in addition to vegetables and dry goods. If the price puts you off then try and buy organic for just a few foods.

Eat less.

  • Eating less is not only better for our waistlines it is good for our wallets and the environment as farming methods and resource intensive.

Only buy what you need.

  • Work to a weekly meal plan and only buy what you need. This will reduce the need to throw away food and will save you money.

Avoid packaging.

  • Try and buy food items in as natural a state as possible, reducing the need for packaging. If produce is packaged then choose items with recyclable packaging or, better yet, think twice before buying.

Look for the tick.

  • Look for the symbols on packaging to find out more about the food item. Look for Australian Organic and certified sustainable seafood symbols.
