High pathogenicity avian influenza (H5N1), also known as bird flu, has recently been detected in wild birds in New South Wales. Community reporting plays an important role in helping authorities monitor and respond to suspected cases. If you see sick, injured or dead birds in the North Sydney local government area, please report the sighting to Council using the form below.
Reporting suspected cases allows Council to:
- Assess potential risks to public safety
- Arrange appropriate management of affected areas
- Coordinate the safe removal of bird carcasses where required
- Support state government surveillance and response efforts
Report an H5N1 Bird Flu Sighting
If you see a sick or dead bird:
- Do not touch, handle or move the animal.
- Keep children and pets away from the area.
- Avoid contact with bird droppings or contaminated surfaces.
- Record the location and, if safe to do so, take a photo from a distance.
Reporting to NSW Government
The NSW Government recommends reporting incidents involving five or more sick or dead wild birds found in the same area. Some species are considered higher risk for avian influenza and should be reported even if only a single animal is affected.
When to report
Clusters: Report groups of five or more sick or dead wild birds in one location.
Single animals: Report any sick or dead waterbird, seabird, shorebird, bird of prey (raptor), or marine mammal, even if only one animal is involved.
Immediate action: Contact the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline on 1800 675 888 as soon as possible.
