Everyone is welcome to join us for an engaging talk by guest speaker William Coleman, an academic who has held positions at leading universities including Cambridge, Oxford, ANU and the University of Notre Dame Australia. His work explores the history of economic thought and the role of economics in society.
In his talk, “John Robertson: A Life Told Through Sydney Harbour,” William sheds new light on one of New South Wales’ most influential figures. Sir John Robertson, afive-time Premier and architect of the Robertson Land Acts, is usually remembered for his political legacy, but his life was also closely tied to Sydney Harbour.
From his arrival at Circular Quay to his final days at Watsons Bay, the talk traces Robertson’s life through moments connected to the harbour. Along the way, you’ll hear stories about his family’s link to Cremorne, his involvement following the Dunbar shipwreck, his opposition to blackbirding, and even his early ideas for a Sydney Harbour Bridge.
