North Sydney Council is progressing critical environmental investigations at Long Bay, Cammeray, in response to reports of discoloured water, following preliminary work by the NSW government.
The nine-month investigation, led by the NSW Department of Climate Change, Energy, the Environment and Water (DCCEEW), brings together leading scientific expertise to study Tunks Park and assess the impact of groundwater on the receiving waters of Long Bay.
The research follows reports of discoloured, milky blue‑green water flowing into Long Bay. The investigation will provide valuable insights into groundwater movement and environmental dynamics in the area, including the possible impacts of acid sulphate soils. By collecting and analysing data on water and soil conditions, the project will help guide evidence‑based decisions for the long‑term care of Tunks Park and Long Bay.
As part of the project, a small amount of research equipment will be installed on the Tunks Park foreshore, including an instrument box and solar panels to support continuous water quality monitoring. The installation will operate under a 12‑month permit commencing on Tuesday 12 May, 2026 and is designed to cause minimal disruption. All equipment will be removed once the research phase is complete.
All impacted residents will be notified by Council of any disruptions as the installation and research activities are carried out.
By progressing this research, Council is helping ensure that Tunks Park remains a healthy and vibrant space for the community and future generations.
