National Volunteer Week (18–24 May) celebrates the contribution of volunteers across Australia and encourages more people to get involved.
This year’s theme, Your Year to Volunteer, celebrates the commitment of existing volunteers while encouraging new people to get involved in ways that work for them. It is a chance to say thank you, and an invitation for more people to discover the positive impact volunteering can have locally.
In 2026, the United Nations will also mark the International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development (IYV2026), recognising the vital role volunteers play in achieving the global 2030 Agenda. This global focus aligns strongly with Bushcare’s contribution to key sustainability goals, particularly Sustainable Cities and Communities, Climate Action and Life on Land. Throughout the year, North Sydney Council will celebrate the impact of Bushcare volunteers and invite the community to be part of IYV2026 by joining a Bushcare meeting or taking part in events such as National Tree Day.
Help care for North Sydney’s bushland
To mark National Volunteer Week, North Sydney Council is encouraging existing volunteers and people interested in getting involved to join a Bushcare group this May. Bushcare volunteers play a vital role in protecting native plants and wildlife, improving biodiversity and helping care for local parks and reserves. Activities are guided by trained supervisors and no prior experience is required.

Community members are invited to attend one of the following Bushcare sessions:

Thursday 21 May with Balls Head Bushcare Group and the Bushcare Nursery Afternoon Group

Saturday 23 May Mortlock Reserve Bushcare Group and Forsyth Park Bushcare Group
Before attending, please complete a volunteer application form and contact the Bushcare Convenor or Supervisor for the group you’re interested in joining, so they know to expect you.
