Reusable cups are coming to North Sydney Oval

North Sydney Oval is introducing reusable cups as part of a partnership with WOSUP, helping prevent more than 24,000 single-use plastic cups from going to landfill each year.

Starting this weekend, visitors to North Sydney Oval will notice a simple change that could make a big difference to reducing waste.

As part of a 12-month agreement with WOSUP, reusable cups will replace the single-use plastic cups currently used to serve draught beer, wine and spirits at the venue.

North Sydney Oval currently uses an estimated 800 plastic cups per game across approximately 30 games each year. By introducing a reuse system, Council aims to keep more than 24,000 plastic cups out of landfill over the next 12 months while encouraging more sustainable event practices.

Mayor Zoë Baker said the initiative supports Council's commitment to reducing waste and finding practical ways to use resources more efficiently.

"We know that large events can generate significant amounts of waste and initiatives like this help us explore practical solutions that reduce our environmental impact."

"North Sydney Oval is an important community venue, and this initiative gives patrons an opportunity to be part of a simple change that could make a meaningful difference over time."

Under the program, drinks currently served in single-use plastic cups, including draught beer, wine and spirits, will instead be served in reusable WOSUP cups. Once finished, patrons can return their cups to collection points around the venue, where they will be recovered, professionally cleaned and prepared for reuse.

WOSUP CEO Martin Salter said partnerships like this demonstrate how practical reuse systems can reduce waste while maintaining a great experience for patrons.

"WOSUP is proud to be leading the transition to reusable packaging across Australia's sporting venues and we're delighted to partner with North Sydney Council on this important initiative."

"Together, we're demonstrating that practical reuse systems can significantly reduce waste while maintaining a great experience for patrons. Small changes at venues like North Sydney Oval can have a lasting impact on reducing single-use plastic waste across Australia."

The initiative supports Council's broader sustainability goals, including reducing waste and conserving natural resources. It also aligns with the NSW Government's focus on expanding reuse systems through the NSW Plastics Plan 2.0.

Council will work with WOSUP and venue operators to monitor participation and cup return rates throughout the year.

Visitors can support the initiative by returning their cups after use and helping reduce single-use plastic waste at North Sydney Oval.
