North Sydney Council is encouraging residents to report sightings of sick or dead birds to help monitor and respond to the recent detection of avian influenza (H5N1), also known as bird flu, in wild birds in New South Wales.
Community reporting plays an important role in protecting local wildlife, public spaces and the broader environment. By reporting sightings promptly, Council can assess potential risks, secure affected areas where required and arrange for the safe removal of bird carcasses.
Avian influenza is a viral disease that affects birds and has recently been detected in a small number of wild birds in NSW. While the risk to human health remains low, authorities are urging the public to remain vigilant and avoid contact with sick or dead birds.
If you encounter a sick or dead bird:

Do not touch, move or handle the animal.

Keep children and pets away from the area.

Avoid contact with feathers, droppings or contaminated surfaces.

Record the location and, if safe to do so, take a photograph from a distance.
Residents can report sightings through Council's online reporting form, which helps Council respond quickly and coordinate with relevant authorities where necessary.
