North Sydney residents can now explore where State Significant Development (SSD) proposals are located across the local area through Council's new interactive SSD Map.
The online map provides a central place for the community to view current SSD proposals, understand their status and access links to detailed project information on the NSW Planning Portal. Residents can zoom into their street or suburb, click on an SSD site, and learn more about developments that are being assessed by the NSW Government.
The map has been developed in response to recent NSW Government housing reforms, which allow certain large-scale housing developments to be assessed as State Significant Developments rather than through Council's development application (DA) process. Unlike local DAs, which are assessed and determined by North Sydney Council, SSDs are assessed and approved by the NSW Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure on behalf of the NSW Government.
While Council does not make decisions on SSD applications, it continues to assess and determine hundreds of local development applications each year demonstrating Council's ongoing role in supporting housing delivery while maintaining rigorous planning standards.
Council's role is to help the community understand what is proposed and how to participate in the planning process, while decisions on State Significant Developments remain the responsibility of the NSW Government. The map brings together information in one place and directs users to official NSW Government resources, where community members can access up-to-date project information and make submissions during exhibition periods. Council officers will also be making written submissions on State Significant Developments to the NSW Government.
Residents can explore the interactive map and learn more about State Significant Developments and NSW planning reforms on Council's website.
