North Sydney Council is inviting the community to have their say on a proposed package of road safety improvements for Blues Point Road and the wider McMahons Point precinct.
The proposed improvements aim to create a safer, quieter and more pedestrian-friendly neighbourhood by addressing long-standing community concerns about hoon driving, speeding and traffic noise. Community feedback has consistently identified issues including dangerous driving behaviour, speeding, excessive traffic noise and challenges for people walking within the area. The project is included in Council's Delivery Program 2025–2029 and Operational Plan 2026–2027 and funded through the Special Rate Variation.
As the main through road in McMahons Point, Blues Point Road is used daily by residents, visitors and people accessing local shops, public transport, parks and the waterfront. The proposed improvements aim to make the area safer and more comfortable for everyone and would also support an application to Transport for NSW (TfNSW) for reduced speed limits throughout the McMahons Point peninsula.

Gateway Treatments
New gateway treatments are proposed at key entry points to the McMahons Point peninsula to signal to drivers that they are entering a slower speed, pedestrian-focused area. Proposed improvements include:

Continuous footpath treatment at Chuter Street south of Union Street

Continuous footpath treatment at Thomas Street south of Union Street

Kerb build-out at Waiwera Street, south of Lavender Street
Pedestrian Safety Improvements
Pedestrian safety improvements are proposed along Blues Point Road to make it easier and safer for people to walk between homes, shops, public transport, parks and the waterfront.
Proposed improvements include:
Blues Point Road south of French Street

Replace the existing pedestrian refuge island with a raised pedestrian crossing

Relocate and upgrade the existing non-compliant in-lane bus stop to the south of the new crossing

Relocate the existing loading zone further south beyond the relocated bus stop
Blues Point Road south of McManus Street

Replace the existing pedestrian refuge island with a raised pedestrian crossing
Blues Point Road and Henry Lawson Avenue Intersection

Replace the existing pedestrian refuge island on Blues Point Road with a raised pedestrian crossing

Install a new pedestrian crossing across Henry Lawson Avenue

Provide a continuous footpath treatment at the entry to the 10 km/h shared zone at the southern end of Blues Point Road

Provide a continuous footpath treatment across Warung Street
-
Narrow the intersection through kerb extensions, landscaping improvements and additional street tree planting to enhance the public domain and encourage lower vehicle speeds
Traffic Calming Measures
Speed cushions are proposed at several locations along Blues Point Road and Henry Lawson Avenue to help reduce vehicle speeds and improve safety for pedestrians.

Blues Point Road adjacent to Nottingham Street Reserve

Blues Point Road north of Parker Street

Blues Point Road south of West Crescent Street
Parking Changes
Approximately 13 on-street parking spaces along Blues Point Road would be removed to accommodate the proposed pedestrian crossings.
These changes are required to provide safe sight lines for pedestrians, support traffic calming measures and create opportunities for streetscape improvements.
