Be Seen: Portraits of Queer North Sydney
Be Seen is a photographic project that celebrates the diversity and lived experiences of LGBTQIA+ people connected to the North Sydney Council LGA on the lands of the Cammeraygal people.
Led by Anna Hay and Sophie Willison, participants were invited via an open EOI process to have their portraits taken at locations of personal significance, whether that be their homes, a familiar street or other sites meaningful to their queer experience. Alongside each portrait, a short audio reflection has been recorded, capturing their connection to that place.
Together, these portraits and narratives form a living archive of queer life in North Sydney, exploring identity, memory and connection to place.
Be Seen: Portraits of Queer North Sydney was shown as part of the Pride Picnic in Ted Mack Civic Park on Sunday 14 June and will be on display in Council Chambers's In Transit Gallery Space until 30 June 2026.
Portraits and audio reflections can be experienced here.
On 14 June 2026, Pride Picnic attendees were also invited to have their portraits taken by Anna and Sophie at the Be Seen Photobooth. These portraits are available to download here.
About the artists: The project will be delivered by creative collaborators and partners, Anna Hay and Sophie Willison. Anna brings extensive experience in socially engaged portraiture and Sophie is a photographer, independent publisher, and community workshop facilitator.
