The Artists Studio at the Coal Loader supports artists and creatives with a community-focused and socially-engaged interest in sustainability and the environment to develop their practice over a 12-month, fully subsidised residency.
Residents are supported to host open studios, workshops, talks and other events that invite residents and visitors alike to make, reflect, learn and connect.
In 2026, eco-arts collective The Tree Veneration is in-residence, with a different collective member in residence every six weeks.
About The Tree Veneration Society
The Tree Veneration Society is a registered charity and transdisciplinary, contemporary eco-arts collective based in Sydney, dedicated to trees, their ecosystems, and human interactions with them.
They aim to inspire their audience to respect the natural world and commit to protecting it. They do this by offering sensorial experiences with nature through intergenerational workshops, combining environmental education with art, and multidisciplinary exhibitions and events.
Their collective commitment ensures they are a catalyst for change. They draw on the power of nature and art to transcend culture and language barriers, to pull diverse communities together and facilitate inclusivity. They create space for reflection, conversation, and action.

Current artist-in-residence: Paula Broom
Paula Broom’s practice reflects her interest in preserving natural systems and the coexistence of humans with what eco-philosopher David Abram calls “the more-than-human world.” Her work is informed by both art practice and environmental research.
Working across sculpture, installation and expanded photo media, often integrating slow craft processes, she investigates interconnected ecological and social issues that impact our collective future. She uses natural materials and occasionally her own body to examine personal, human and planetary concerns.
Her work has been exhibited locally and overseas and featured in several online publications. She has been a finalist in a range of awards, including the Greenway Art Prize, Head On and Australian Photography Awards. Paula is an executive member of the eco-arts collective the Tree Veneration Society, through which she runs creative community workshops that foster engagement with the natural world and highlight art’s capacity to support wellbeing, connection and place
