Solar energy systems

Hot-water heat pumps

Hot-water heat pumps are a type of solar hot-water system that are as efficient as roof-mounted solar hot water systems. Heat pumps don’t require development consent.

Solar panel installation

You can install a solar photovoltaic (PV) system without Council consent if the following conditions are met:

  • trees are not removed or substantially trimmed
  • the planned system is less than 10 kW capacity in a residential zone
  • property is not in a heritage conservation area.

If you’re in a heritage conservation area, the system must be located so the solar panels are not attached to a wall or roof facing a primary road.

In all other instances, Council consent will be required.

If you're unsure whether you need development consent or what type of system is most suitable for your home, contact our Customer Service Centre and ask to speak to our Sustainability Programs Coordinator or a Planning Advisor.
