About Gabby Malpas

Gabby Malpas is a Chinese adoptee raised by white parents in New Zealand.  Using her own narrative, she challenges the centuries old, western tradition of Chinoiserie. Initially familiar in a blue and white traditional Chinese style, the works have references to Australia and an Australian aesthetic. Gabby creates and shares her own story within her artwork.

Gabby also brings together the traditional style of Chinese vessels and plants- in a reference to the history of Chinese market gardens in this region and the diversity that immigrants adapting to new places, utilising both local and new produce they brought to Australia, each with their own story.
