Celebrate the launch of Dr Ian Hoskins' new online exhibition that explores the Chinese community in North Sydney from the 1870s to 1940.

The Chinese have been barely visible in historical accounts of North Sydney, which is typically characterised as a place of boat builders, ferry wharves and grand harbourside homes. But it was also a place where Chinese people made their living, often as market gardeners and storekeepers.

Hear from Dr Ian Hoskins, curator of the new online exhibition, and Claire Lowrie, Associate Professor from the University of Wollongong, who specialises in the history of labour, migration, and colonialism in Australia and southeast Asia. This online exhibition, drawing on North Sydney Council archives, immigration records and contemporary press, goes some way to writing the Chinese back into North Sydney’s history.

Bookings essential. Held in celebration of History Week 2024.
