Max Dupain was a major cultural figure in Australia and a leader in modern photography for over fifty years, during which he produced a number of images now regarded as iconically Australian. He championed modern photography and a distinctive Australian approach.

From award-winning writer Helen Ennis comes his first ever biography. Max Dupain: A Portrait explores the influences behind his creativity and examines his views on masculinity, love, the body, war, and nature, presenting him as a passionate artist with a complex relationship to his work.

About the author

The author, Helen Ennis, specialises in Australian photography and has held key positions, including Curator of Photography at the National Gallery of Australia. She is a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Humanities and received the J. Dudley Johnston Medal in 2021 from the British Royal Photographic Society.
