Join us across North Sydney for a vibrant program of free events celebrating First Nations culture, knowledge and creativity. From art workshops and author talks to bushwalks and film screenings, there’s something for all ages to learn, reflect and enjoy.

First Nations Bilingual Storytimes

Dates: Friday 29 May, 19 June and 31 July

Immerse your family in the incredible first languages of Australia through a program of introductory bilingual story times.  Join our friendly presenters as they share books, stories, and language. This program is for children and families of all language backgrounds. 

No bookings required.

For Mothers groups, preschools, or larger groups please email kidzone@northsydney.nsw.gov.au to ensure we have enough space to accommodate you at the session. 

Basket weaving workshops with Jodie Dowd & Sasha Parlett

Date: Saturday, 30 May and 20 June

Join us during the Gai-mariagal Festival and learn the art of weaving in a hands-on experience with local artists Jodie Dowd and Sasha Parlett. 
Connect with First Nations culture and learn traditional weaving methods to create your own bangle and mini basket. Whether you are a seasoned artist or novice, these workshops provide a welcoming space to learn, create, and celebrate First Nations culture and heritage. 

These workshops are suitable for adults and youth aged 12+ when accompanied by an adult. All materials and refreshments will be provided

Weaving and Yarning circle with Koori Kinnections

Date: Thursday, 4 June

Learn how to weave using traditional First Nations methods. This is a cross-generational event for ages 13 – 35(ish), perfect for those looking for deeper cultural understanding, connection, chatter and community.

Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Walk in partnership with Lane Cove Council 

Date: Sunday 28 June

Discover the indigenous heritage and history of Lane Cove and North Sydney on this tour. 

Join us for a wonderful opportunity to gain insights into the local heritage of the Cammeraygal and Wallumedegal people.  

Enrich your understanding of Aboriginal culture, spirituality, language and connection to Country with Karen Smith from the Aboriginal Heritage Office. This tour will visit Tambourine Bay in Riverview and Berry Island in Waverton.

Threadlines Art Exhibition

Dates: Thursday, 2 July to Sunday, 2 August 

Bringing together five First Nations artists across residency pathways in an exhibition shaped by weaving, journey and connection. 

Curated by Nicole Monks, Threadlines presents the work of current North Sydney Council Creative Spaces First Nations Residents Jodie Dowd, Nathan Sentance and Emma Hicks, who are joined by artists Ngaire Pakai and Jasmine Christie from Newcastle’s Creative Incubator First Nations emerging artists residency. 

Threadlines centres on pathways, journey, connection and weaving, both literally and metaphorically. Weaving operates as a connective device across practices, linking poetry, film, material culture and community storytelling, while foregrounding First Nations leadership, intergenerational exchange and shared making. 

Opening night - Thursday 2 July, 6 pm to 8 pm 

Creative Drop-In Workshop: Connection to Country through Waterways

Date: Saturday 4 July 

Join artist educators Merindah Funnell (Wiradjuri) and Emma Hicks (Gamilaroi) for a relaxed, drop-in style creative workshop on connection to Country through the plants, animals, and waterways that connect us all. 

Merindah, who lives and works on Dharug and Gundungurra Country, will bring along a beautiful selection of native plants from her own garden that she has nurtured to invite back native wildlife and habitats. These plants will become a source of inspiration for our artmaking and conversation. 

Participants will experiment with a variety of materials including drawing, watercolour, wax crayons, oil pastels to create their own personalised tote.

Meet the author with Melissa-Jane Fogarty

Date: Wednesday 8 July, 2pm to 3pm

Location: Stanton Library, Level 1 

Go behind the scenes with a real-life Author! Join us as Stanton Library for a session filled with stories and writing secrets and meet the creator behind some amazing books! Melissa’s books will be available for purchase after the session.
