NAIDOC Week 2025 celebrations highlighted First Nations creators and deepened understanding of First Nations histories and cultures.
North Sydney came alive with colour, culture and stories for NAIDOC Week 2025.
Karen Smith, Education Officer at the Aboriginal Heritage Office, shared knowledge about native bush foods, their medicinal properties and health benefits. A packed house at Stanton Library learnt about traditional healing practices, including stories of Karen's ancestors' experience, and local native plants through a hands-on display – and wrapped it all up with fresh lemon myrtle tea from a local Indigenous supplier.
Muruwari artist Dr Virginia led two creative workshops as part of the Gai-mariagal Festival: a hands-on printmaking workshop exploring the deep connection between art, nature and cultural heritage; and an interactive weaving and yarning circle where participants crafted their own woven pieces and shared heartfelt stories.
Over at Stanton Library, kids created mindful masterpieces a fun sand art workshop using designs by Indigenous artist Kerri-Ann Taggart, and enjoyed a special NAIDOC Storytime featuring stories, songs and books by First Nations creators.
