New state-of-the-art tennis courts have been completed at Primrose Park in Cremorne.
The new facilities at Primrose Park include four new tennis courts with synthetic grass and line markings, new court lighting, a new ‘hit-up’ practice wall, and new equipment including nets, fencing and seating. There are also new change facilities, a new communal BBQ area, and a small children’s playground which will make the courts very family friendly.
North Sydney Mayor Zoe Baker said: “This upgrade will ensure the Primrose Park tennis courts remain a much-loved and well used community facility for many years to come.
“Our growing population and density mean our local sports facilities are more important than ever and they need investment to ensure they remain fit for the future.”
The original tennis courts were constructed in 1985/86 on reclaimed landfill at the former sewerage treatment works site. External engineering consultants advised Council that adding a topping slab would only be a temporary fix and that a new suspended slab with piles inserted into the bedrock would need to be built to ensure the tennis courts would be fit for future generations to enjoy.
With the high costs involved for a long-term solution, Council appealed to the Federal Government for help and was awarded $2,175,138 million funding in 2021 through the Local Road and Community Infrastructure Program.
The upgrade project included:
- new concrete slab underneath the tennis courts
- four new tennis courts surfaced with new synthetic grass and line marking
- new nets, fencing, seating and shelters
- upgraded tennis court lighting to comply with current regulations
- upgraded male/female toilet and change facilities
- upgraded shop facilities
- new outdoor seating and a communal BBQ area
- a new ‘hit up wall’ at the western end of the courts
- a small new children's playground
- drainage improvements to address previous drainage issues in and around the courts
- new footpaths, landscaping and paving in and around the courts.
