Get involved in the Aussie Bird Count and Great Southern Bioblitz to help protect our local wildlife.
This week, two citizen science opportunities invite you to step outside, observe local wildlife and contribute to the understanding of our environment – no science degree required!
Aussie Bird Count (20–26 October)
Birds populate our backyards, balconies, parks and schoolyards, and they have important stories to tell about the health of our environment. With one in six Australian bird species now under threat, it’s more important than ever to pay attention.
Join thousands of Australians in BirdLife Australia’s Aussie Bird Count and help take a national snapshot of our feathered friends. All it takes is 20 minutes in your favourite outdoor space to count the birds you see. You can submit your results via the app or web form, and use the built-in bird finder to help identify species.

Great Southern BioBlitz (24–27 October)
Be part of the largest bioblitz in the southern hemisphere! The Great Southern BioBlitz is a grassroots citizen science event aiming to document as many species of flora, fauna, fungi and aquatic life as possible over 96 hours.
Whether you're in a park, bushland or your own backyard, every observation helps scientists understand and protect our ecosystems. If you don't know what the animal is, don't worrry – clear photos or audio recordings will help others to identify it.
How to take part:
- Register on the Great Southern Bioblitz website
- Download the iNaturalist application to your handheld device or make an account on your computer
- Join the North Sydney Council project to compete with other local government areas
- Record any wildlife you observe between 24 and 27 October
Happy wildlife spotting!
