Celebrate National Recycling Week

Recycling right starts at home with knowing what you can and can’t put in your recycling bin.

Celebrate Planet Ark’s National Recycling Week (10-16 November) by giving your household items a new life.

Never bin batteries

From lithium-ion batteries to alkaline and button cells, all types contain hazardous chemicals that can ignite if damaged. Fires often start when batteries are crushed or compacted in garbage trucks, posing a huge risk to our waste collection operators serving the community each week. Even if a fire doesn’t occur, batteries placed in kerbside bins can end up in landfill. Their hazardous chemicals can contaminate and pollute our waterways, bushlands and waste facilities.

Reduce food waste at home

With over a third of the red lidded bin consisting of food waste, food waste avoidance will make a big difference to the amount of waste going to landfill. Planning your meals, storing food appropriately or joining the compost revolution will help to reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions in landfill.

Rescue old household items

Confused about where to recycle mobile phones, coat hangers, corks and yoga mats? Visit the A-Z Waste and Recycling page to find out how to recycle the tricky items you have at home.

Visit the North Sydney Community Recycling Centre (CRC)

Dispose of household problem waste that doesn’t belong in kerbside bins, including batteries, paint, e-waste and more. The CRC is a free, drive-through facility and does not require bookings or appointments.

Open Wednesday to Friday 8am to 2pm and weekends 8am to 4pm.
