Our newest affordable housing development has officially opened in Cammeray – delivered through a partnership between Council and community housing provider Link Wentworth.
The development provides high-quality accommodation for vulnerable residents, reflecting North Sydney’s commitment to social inclusion.
The four-storey complex at 287 Miller Street, Cammeray was opened on Thursday 20 November by Senator the Hon Jenny McAllister, Minister for Disability and the National Disability Insurance Scheme.
Mayor Zoë Baker said: “Tackling the current housing crisis requires collaboration across all levels of government and the community housing sector, and North Sydney Council is proud to partner with Link Wentworth to redevelop this site into high-quality accommodation for some of the most vulnerable members of our community. I am also proud that North Sydney Council remains committed to advocating for more diverse and affordable housing options across our local area.”
The redevelopment replaces an old boarding house with 12 modern studio units, communal living spaces, shared laundry facilities, storage, and outdoor areas. Several units are dedicated to meeting specific community needs, including for people at risk of or experiencing homelessness and on the social housing waitlist. Three of the units are fully accessible.
This project is part of Council’s long-standing commitment to affordable housing. Since launching its pioneering program in 1984, Council has worked to protect and replace housing stock in response to growing need. Over the past four decades, more than 2,000 boarding house rooms have disappeared across the local area, while rental affordability has declined sharply. Today, partnerships like this are essential to ensure safe, stable homes for those most in need.
