1000 Books Before School is a free early literacy program aimed at helping children aged 0-5 build their literacy skills before they start school.
It's as simple as it sounds! Read three books a day and finish in less than a year; read one book a day and finish in less than three years.
This can be favourite books read over and again, books read through Online Storytime or online with our kid's online resources.
Step 1: Join up
You can register:
- in-person at any Shorelink Library (Stanton, Mosman, Lane Cove) to receive your paper reading tracker, or
- through the Beanstack app (downloadable through App Store or Google Play Store) to track your reading digitally and receive digital badges. Alternatively, you can also use the Beanstack website.
Step 2: Start reading
Read books at daycare, the library, or at home. No matter what, where, or with who - every book counts!
They can be physical books, audiobooks, ebooks; they can be books read to children at childcare or during Storytime, books they read themselves, or books you read to them.
Remember, all books count towards the 1000 books total!

Step 3: Log your reading
Keep track of your reading progress by logging every book read on your paper reading log or the Beanstack app.
Not a member of Stanton Library? Library membership is free. We recommend getting a library card for all young readers.
When you have read 100 books, collect your 1000 Books Before School tote bag from your local Shorelink Library. For every additional 100 books read, you will receive a milestone patch for your bag.
1000 Books Before School is at the heart of how libraries promote early literacy. The library is a recognised pathway to life-long learning and prosperity in the communities we serve, with the core of our services being to provide opportunities for children to enjoy reading.
Modelled on similar programs from the State Library of Victoria and Paramatta Library, the 1000 Books Before School program is proudly supported by the following councils:
