Access Council Information

Right to information laws changed on 1 July 2010.

All New South Wales state and local government agencies have reformed the way government-held information is provided to members of the public.

The Government Information (Public Access) Act 2009 - GIPA - came into effect on 1 July 2010. It replaced previous access to information legislation, namely Freedom of Information (FOI) laws and Section 12 of the Local Government Act. The new right to information system requires councils and other government agencies to proactively release documents to improve openness, transparency and accountability in government.
