North Sydney Council respectfully acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of the land and waters of the North Sydney local government areas, the Cammeraygal people

The First Nations Artist Residency Program is a creative residency offered to two (2) First Nations artists or artist collectives to develop new work, have space to work on existing work and engage with community on Cammeraygal land. The residency is hosted in North Sydney Council’s Alfred Street Artists’ Studios (Milsons Point).

The residency provides dedicated cultural support and creative mentorship to ensure a safe and respectful experience. The residencies will be supported through a relationship with Cammeraygal elder, Auntie Jeanie Moran and offers a mentorship opportunity with mili mili, a First Nations-led organisation directed by Yamaji Wajarri, Dutch and English designer and artist Nicole Monks.

Who can apply

The program is open to First Nations creative practitioners working across a range of disciplines including visual arts, design, performance, literature, arts writers, independent curators, interdisciplinary practices, new media and emerging technologies. While all art forms will be considered, the type of work produced must be conducive to the open plan nature of the spaces.

There are two (2) residencies available as part of this program. Each residency is open to applications from an individual First Nations artist or a collective.

The successful applicants will receive:

  • a rent free studio space at Alfred Street Artists’ Studios 41 Alfred Street for 12 months
  • cultural support through a relationshop with Auntie Jeanie Moran
  • opportunity for creative mentorship with First Nations led-program partner, mili mili
  • funded, Council-organised professional development opportunities that may include artist or curator studio visits or professional headshots
  • paid opportunities to share creative work through open studios, artist showcases, community workshops or projects, and artist talks

Artists with an interest in developing public art are particularly encouraged to apply for the residency. mili mili will offer successful applicants an opportunity to learn about public art processes through a monthly formal check in 1hr in-person or online meeting and mentorship (which may include residency, office and/or site visits).

Cultural support

North Sydney Council is committed to ensuring cultural safety throughout the application process and whilst in residence. Council has engaged First Nation’s led organisation mili mili and Auntie Jeanie Moran to offer a range of supportive measures to the successful applicant during the residency.

Supportive measures can include organising a Welcome to Country ceremony conducted by Auntie Jeanie or another respected member of the local Indigenous community, together with opportunities to meet regularly and provide cultural support.
