Any battery disposed of incorrectly could cause a fire.
Every day, 30 fires relating to batteries occur around Australia adding up to over 10,000 fires each year.
From lithium-ion batteries to alkaline and button cells, all types contain hazardous chemicals that can ignite if damaged. Fires often start when batteries are crushed or compacted in garbage trucks, posing a huge risk to our waste collection operators serving the community each week.
Even if a fire doesn’t occur, batteries placed in kerbside bins can end up in landfill. Their hazardous chemicals can contaminate and pollute our waterways, bushlands and waste facilities.
Lithium-ion are the most common batteries powering everyday technology. When disposed of in red kerbside bins they can pose a serious fire hazard.
Proper disposal of these items is crucial:
- smartphones
- vapes and e-cigarettes
- laptops
- e-bikes
- battery charging packs
- power tools
- electric toothbrushes
- children’s toys
95% of a battery’s components can be reused and recycled into new products.
