Sustainability Policies & Plans

The Community Strategic Plan sets a strategic direction for where the community of North Sydney wants to be in the year 2020.

Council has developed associated policies and plans that will ensure the vision of that plan is achieved. Future documents produced by Council and subsequent decisions made by Council will be tested against the Community Strategic Plan to ensure that Council is working towards the achievement of its vision.

Environmental Sustainability Strategy

Sustainability is one of Council's eight core values.

As such, equity, preservation, justice and precaution are important principles that help focus everything we do at North Sydney. The expiration of existing 2020 targets for water and energy conservation that were set in 2002 and 2004 respectively have prompted the development of a new Environmental Sustainability Strategy to help Council define and achieve its environmental sustainability aspirations and obligations to 2030.

The first step in developing the strategy was to develop a

Future Environmental Sustainability Directions Paper (2MB)

which provides a comprehensive review of local, state, federal and international strategies, analyses and forecasting, as well as the rationale and analysis for proposed strategic environmental sustainability targets and actions to 2030. It was prepared in-house in close collaboration with the Environmental Sustainability Strategy Project Control Group which consisted of staff from across all divisions of Council.

The Environmental Sustainability Strategy will be considered by Council in May 2021.

Greenhouse Action and Water Management

Since the early 2000's, North Sydney Council has been constructively focussed on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and potable water consumption within its municipality. These efforts have been focussed on both Council's own operations and supporting and influencing the community to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions and water use.

On 22 June 2015 Council adopted the Greenhouse Action and Water Management Plan 2015-2020 as a consultant report to advise Council’s energy and water management actions and strategies. It also adopted a new Community greenhouse gas emission reduction target of 15% of 1996 baseline levels by 2020, and a new Community water reduction target of 10% of 2001/02 baseline levels by 2020 in line with the consultant's recommendations.

Council deferred adopting new 2030 Council greenhouse gas emission and water reduction targets until 2020 when the plan is due for revision.

Council reports on environmental outcomes through its Annual Reports, and every 4 years in its End of Term report.

Copies of these reports, including those produced on behalf of Council by the Northern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (NSROC), are available below:
