Washing

  • Wait until clothes really need washing and you have a full load before using your washing machine.
  • Set the load adjustment dial to match the quantity of clothes you're washing.
  • Clean the washing machine lint filter regularly.
  • Use water friendly phosphate-free laundry products. Many detergents contain high levels of salt which can damage plants and the soil.
  • Use one third of a cup of dissolved washing soda (sodium carbonate) to cut grease and remove stains. It also boosts soap and softens water. In the laundry detergent section at supermarkets for around $2 for 750 grams.
  • Half a cup of Borax can also be used to boost soap and clean stains. Generally found in the drain cleaning area in supermarkets for around $3 for 500 grams. For really heavy stains mix to a paste with water and leave to dry.
  • Soak heavily stained items in warm water with half a cup of washing soda as a pre-wash.
  • Eucalyptus oil or spray can remove stains such as biro, grass, glue, lipstick, grease and chewing gum.
  • Vinegar can act as fabric softener - dissolve half a cup in water and soak before washing.
